04 Nov Can You Reuse Vinyl Window Decals?
Vinyl window graphics are a popular advertising technique for many types of small businesses, from retail stores and cafes to gyms and salons. They use them to promote special offers, showcase seasonal sales, advertise new products and more. Because of their popularity we have often been asked, “Are vinyl window decals reusable?”
Some businesses do reuse window decals on a rotating or seasonal basis. For example, they might reuse their custom graphics every year for back-to-school sales or special holiday promotions. However, not all vinyl window decals are reusable. It all depends on the type of vinyl and the quality of the printing. We explain how and when you can reuse window decals, and which types are best suited for multiple uses.
How Can I Reuse My Custom Printed Decals?
You can only reuse your window decals if you pick the right material and handle them with care. Sometimes they’re reusable, and sometimes they’re not.
Let’s start with the good news: you can reuse high-quality window graphics! But doing so depends on a few factors. Here’s what you need to do if you want to reuse your custom window decals.
- Choose the Right Material
High-quality decals are more durable and can be removed and reapplied without damage. For example, “changeable” vinyl decals are designed to be easily removable without damage. Static cling graphics can also be quickly repositioned and easily reused. If you plan to reuse your window graphics, consult your local print shop on the best materials for your application.
- Clean the Surface Thoroughly
Always make sure the wall or window is clean and completely dry before applying your graphics. Keep in mind that if you use an adhesive—even a removable adhesive—you will probably not be able to reuse the decal, unless it was printed on material designed to be repositionable.
- Remove Carefully
Gently peel the static cling graphic away from the surface. Avoid stretching or scratching it.
- Store Flat
Before you put them away, check your graphics for fading, tears, or significant wear. Clean them gently and store them flat, ideally inside a protective sleeve. Then place them between two pieces of clean cardboard to prevent damage.
- Reapplication
Before reapplying, wipe the graphic with a damp cloth to remove any dust or residue. Make sure both the decal and the surface are clean and dry.
When Are Window Graphics Not Reusable?
Not all window graphics can be reused. For example, we do not recommend trying to reuse adhesive vinyl decals. Once applied and removed, the adhesive can lose its stickiness. It’s also easy to tear vinyl stickers during removal, so they’re not suited for reuse.
Perforated vinyl stickers can also be removed easily—just don’t count on them adhering after being taken off. Because of the mini-perforations and the stickiness of the adhesive, the sticker is probably going to rip.
