- Your logo goes at the top.
Always place your logo at the top and not at the bottom. This makes it impossible to miss—we read from top to bottom, left to right, so placing your logo at the top will make your banner read like a headline. Follow your logo with an illustration, photograph, or art that accurately conveys your message or intention.
- Image is everything.
Images are the first thing people tend to notice first, so including at least one high-quality image is a must. Make sure your image is a large enough size that it won’t end up looking pixelated on a large banner. Also, be sure you’re displaying your brand in a way that’s relatable to your target consumer and highlights key features. Choose imagery that reflects the lifestyle, habits, or values of your audience and shows them using the product. For example, if you’re promoting a new cider at the farmers market, you might choose an image of a young couple sipping steaming mugs on the porch of a cabin while their dogs lie at their feet.
- Color choice should reflect intention and branding.
When deciding on the colors for a banner, you should reflect on your message, your branding, and the reaction you want to get. For example, if you’re raising awareness about mental health and your brand conveys wellbeing and happiness, a light green could be the perfect choice. On the other hand, if you’re trying to incite a purchase, red is the go-to color for banners. We wouldn’t recommend making the entire design red—this could come across as too aggressive. But for text like, “Flash Sale!” or “BOGO Half Off!” using red works very well.
- Simplicity is key.
Whether you’re designing for digital or print media, sticking to a few key elements is the best strategy for success. A busy design with too many words or too many styles overwhelms the eyes and makes people look away. If you want to catch someone’s attention and have them linger long enough to read your message, keep your banner design simple.
- Make your message clear and obvious.
A confusing message won’t serve your brand at all. To keep your design on track, ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” As in, “Why am I choosing these colors? How does this image represent my main message? Why am I wording my main text like this—how does it get people to purchase?” Continue with this line of questioning until you’re sure you have good reasons for every design decision you make. This will keep your messaging clear and make it more appealing to your audience.
